W.C. Smith

W.C. SMITH & CO LTD.

LUNENBURG, NS

CIRCA 1899-1920

W.C. SMITH & CO STARTED IN THE LATE 1800’S AS AN EXPORTER OF SALT FISH. THE SALT FISH WERE DRIED ON RACKS ON THE ROLLING HILLS OVERLOOKING LUNENBURG HARBOUR. THEY WERE THEN SHIPPED IN 128 POUND WOODEN BARRELS THAT WERE PRODUCED FROM TREES HARVESTED IN NOVA SCOTIA.

THE SPANISH TEXT ON THIS BARRELHEAD LABEL REFLECTS THE FACT THAT MUCH OF THE SALT COD BEING EXPORTED FROM NOVA SCOTIA WAS BOUND FOR SPANISH & PORTUGESE SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN EUROPE AND THE CARIBBEAN.

IN 1920, W.C. SMITH & CO BECAME LUNENBURG SEA PRODUCTS & IN THE 1940’S WAS TAKEN OVER BY NATIONAL SEA PRODUCTS.

DESPITE THE COLLAPSE OF THE GROUND FISHERY THAT THE COMPANY WAS BUILT ON, THE COMPANY PERSEVERED.

TODAY, NATIONAL SEA PRODUCTS IS KNOWN AS HIGH LINER FOODS AND IS ONE OF THE LARGEST SEAFOOD COMPANIES IN THE WORLD.
