Stevens General Store

STEVENS GENERAL STORE LIMITED

LOUISBOURG, NS

CIRCA 1914-1998

THE GENERAL STORE WAS A FOCAL POINT OF MOST RURAL COMMUNITIES DURING THE 1900’S.  STEVENS GENERAL STORE IN LOUISBOURG WAS NO EXCEPTION.

GORDON STEVENS & HIS FAMILY MOVED FROM TANCOOK ISLAND TO LOUISBOURG AND STARTED A GENERAL STORE IN 1914.  THREE GENERATIONS OF THE STEVENS FAMILY FOLLOWED AND STEVENS GENERAL OPERATED CONTINUOUSLY FOR 84 YEARS.

IN THE 1960’S, DOUG STEVENS BECAME THE HEAD OF THE STORE. IN 1977 HE BUILT A NEW, MODERN STORE ON THE SITE OF THE OLD FAMILY HOME ON MAIN ST.

"SERVING ALL YOUR NEEDS WITH PRIDE" WAS DOUGIE’S MOTTO AND ANYONE THAT EVER VISITED KNEW THIS WAS TRUE.  DOUGIE WOULD NEVER LET YOU LEAVE THE STORE WITHOUT TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING. HE AND HIS WIFE, RUTH, WORKED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, 52 WEEKS A YEAR TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WERE ALWAYS TAKEN CARE OF.

WITH THE COLLAPSE OF THE GROUNDFISHERY IN THE 1980’S, LOUISBOURG WENT THROUGH A TRANSFORMATION - THE LARGE FISHPLANTS CLOSED AND UNEMPLOYMENT SOARED.  AT THE SAME TIME, SUPERMARKETS WERE BECOMING BIGGER AND MORE CENTRALLY LOCATED.

DESPITE THE UPS AND DOWNS OF THE FISHERY AND THE TOWN, DOUGIE STEVENS SOLDIERED ON AND OPERATED STEVENS GENERAL STORE UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1999.

TODAY, THE GENERAL STORE IS NO LONGER A FIXTURE IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND WE ARE POORER BECAUSE OF THAT.  THANKFULLY, THE MEMORIES STILL EXIST AND PERHAPS ONE DAY THEY WILL RETURN.
