KEITH’S NOVA SCOTIA BREWERY

HALIFAX, NS

CIRCA 1820-PRESENT

BORN IN SCOTLAND IN 1795, ALEXANDER KEITH IMMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1817. HE STARTED HIS BREWERY IN 1820. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BREWERIES IN NORTH AMERICA.

FOR MANY YEARS, KEITH’S WAS A FULL SERVICE LIQUOR DISTRIBUTOR. ALONG WITH BREWING ON LOWER WATER STREET, KEITH’S IMPORTED SPIRITS FROM HIS NATIVE SCOTLAND AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.

WHILE RUNNING A VERY POPULAR AND GROWING BUSINESS, KEITH WAS ALSO MAYOR OF HALIFAX ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AND SERVED IN THE PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE.

ALEXANDER KEITH DIED IN 1873, AND TO THIS DAY PEOPLE MAKE A PILGRIMAGE TO HIS GRAVE SITE ON HIS BIRTHDAY TO TOAST THIS LARGER THAN LIFE HALIGONIAN.

FROM 1820 THROUGH 2009, EVERY SINGLE OUNCE OF KEITH’S INDIA PALE ALE WAS BREWED IN NOVA SCOTIA. UNTIL 2011, KEITH’S WAS ONLY AVAILABLE IN CANADA. KEITH’S IS NOW OWNED BY LABBATT (A SUBSIDIARY OF ANHEUSER BUSCH INBEV.)

IT IS THAT LONG TRADITION THAT REMAINS INGRAINED IN THE HEART’S OF MANY NOVA SCOTIANS.  KEITH’S REALLY IS NOVA SCOTIA’S BEER.

KEITH’S - THOSE WHO LIKE IT, LIKE IT A LOT.
