40 FATHOM CLAMS

IN MARCH 1928, A PENNSYLVANIA NEWSPAPER TALKED ABOUT 40 FATHOM FISH BEING PREPARED AT THE RITZ CARLTON IN NEW YORK CITY.  IN THE 1940’S,  40 FATHOM FISH ADS APPEARED IN LIFE MAGAZINE.  THE ADS OFTEN FOCUSED ON THE “WAY TO A MAN’S HEART” IS TO COOK HIM FISH.

40 FATHOMS BRAND WAS A PROMINENT BRAND OF FRESH AND FROZEN FISH IN NEW ENGLAND AND IT’S CONNECTION TO NOVA SCOTIA COMES LATER IN ITS HISTORY.

IN 1956, HIGH LINER FOODS OF LUNENBURG ACQUIRED BOSTON’S 40 FATHOMS FISH AS THEIR FIRST AMERICAN ACQUISITION. THE 40 FATHOM BRAND STARTED TO APPEAR ON NOVA SCOTIA SHELVES.

THE CLAM MEATS LABEL THAT WE PRODUCED WAS FROM A LINE OF CANNED CLAMS THAT WERE HARVESTED IN NOVA SCOTIA AND PACKAGED FOR SALE AND EXPORT.

WHEN HIGH LINER MADE ITS ACQUISITION OF 40 FATHOMS, IT MARKED A SHIFT IN DIRECTION OF CROSS BORDER ACQUISITIONS.  FOR DECADES, BEGINNING WITH THE LOBSTER CANNERIES, CANADIAN COMPANIES WERE OFTEN THE ONES BEING ACQUIRED BY THEIR AMERICAN COUNTERPARTS.

TODAY, THE 40 FATHOM BRAND IS ALMOST EXTINCT WITHIN THE HIGH LINER FAMILY, BUT HIGH LINER FOODS IS STRONGER THAN EVER.

WITH ITS HEADQUARTERS IN LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA, HIGH LINER IS NOW ONE OF THE BIGGEST SEAFOOD COMPANIES IN THE WORLD AND HAS OPERATIONS IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES.
